El Clasico Fixture Postponed

La Liga's 10th matchday took a hit when El Clásico was postponed. The first game of the season between Barcelona and Real Madrid was supposed to take place on October 26 at the Camp Nou. But the RFEF, the Spanish soccer federation, decided to change the date for security reasons. It was unclear whether the federation was worried about fans participating in the protests or whether protesters might try to disrupt the game.

The El Clasico match was postponed due to a security risk associated with the harsh sentencing of nine Catalan separatist leaders. The individuals, who had been pushing for independence, were sentenced to between 9 and 13 years in prison. Protests have become commonplace in Barcelona, and La Liga did not want to court controversy by playing a game in a city with so much unrest. Given the stakes involved in El Clasico, it was wise to move the game to December.

Both clubs were consulted on the date change and chose December 18. La Liga issued a statement saying it would appeal. League officials were adamant that the date would conflict with the Copa del Rey. If the league loses its appeal, it could lose money. The league hopes that by December, the governance issues in Catalonia will have been resolved.
